A higher certificate, diploma and degree are three levels of qualification that differ in length, depth, entry requirements and career outcomes. A higher certificate is the shortest and most accessible (often one year), a diploma is more in-depth and career-focused (usually two to three years), and a degree is the longest and most academic (three to four years), opening professional careers and postgraduate study.
Higher certificate
A higher certificate is a one-year entry-level qualification with lower admission requirements (a higher-certificate pass in the NSC). It's a good way to build skills, access a field, or bridge into a diploma or degree if you don't yet meet their requirements.
Diploma
A diploma is a two-to-three-year, practical, career-oriented qualification offered by universities of technology, TVET colleges and some universities. It leads directly to employable skills in fields like engineering, IT, business, hospitality and more, and often includes workplace experience.
Degree
A degree is a three-to-four-year academic qualification requiring a bachelor's pass and usually a higher APS. It develops deeper theoretical knowledge, is required for professional careers (like medicine, engineering, law and accounting), and is the gateway to Honours, Master's and Doctoral study.

Is a diploma as good as a degree?+

Often yes. With good results you can articulate from a higher certificate to a diploma, and from a diploma into a degree or BTech/Advanced Diploma, building your qualifications over time.
What are NQF levels?+
The National Qualifications Framework ranks qualifications by level. A higher certificate is NQF 5, a diploma NQF 6, a bachelor's degree NQF 7, and Honours, Master's and Doctorates are higher still.
